With the passage of time, the day is now celebrated as Valentine’s Day in many countries of the world. The day is associated with the celebration of cultural, religious, and commercial activities of romance and romantic love. It is not a public holiday in any country.
Martyrologies of Saint Valentine of Rome who is known to have been imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers, who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire. As the story goes, Saint Valentine, during his imprisonment restored sight to the blind daughter of his judge. Prior to his execution, Saint Valentine wrote a farewell letter to the girl signed as "Your Valentine". Whereas Saint Valentine laid down his life and was executed, he left a very strong message of love in the memory of which the world celebrates the Valentine’s Day as an expression of love.
Association of the day with romantic love started in the 14th century within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer resulting in flourishment of the tradition of courtly love. Lovers started expressing their love and it became an occasion on which lovers presented flowers, confectionery, and greeting cards in 18th century. Red colored heart shaped symbols of love came into use besides, doves, and the figure of the winged Cupid. The activities include wishes to ward off epilepsy. It’s called Saint Valentine's Malady.
