On Sunday, Feb 11, Reba Mcentire sang the National Anthem in the 2024 Super Bowl before the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers faced off.
McEntire is three-time Grammy winner. It is not the first time that she sang the National Anthem. Her discovery as a singer 50 years ago is related to singing the National Anthem at the 1974 National Finals Rodeo in Oklahoma. Since then she has performed the National Anthem at a number of occasions. However, this was her first performance in the Super Bowl.
McEntire said on Sunday ahead of the game, "This ain't my first rodeo! I'd never have imagined when I sang the anthem at the National Finals Rodeo 50 years ago that I'd be singing it today at the Super Bowl,"
McEntire was wearing a puffy, gray faux fur coat. She moved into the Allegiant Stadium holding hands with her partner, Rex Linn about 3 1/2 hours before kickoff Sunday.
McEntire said when her performance was announced, "I'm honored to be part of some thing as big and historic as the Super Bowl coming to Las Vegas for the first time”.
While she was singing the national anthem, flag-bearing service members stood behind her and jets flew over Allegiant Stadium.
Earlier in January, McEntire told the hosts of "CBS Mornings" about her preparation for the performance of the National Anthem.
McEntire stated, "You just warm up like you do a concert and sing it about five or six times, and get in there, and do it,"
When her manager told her about the opportunity, she said, "He said that they wanted me to sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl, and I said 'Oh my gosh. Well, let me think about that,'" McEntire said in January. "And Rex Linn, my boyfriend, who is a huge football fan, he said, 'Yes, she'll do it. Absolutely.' So that's where we're at."
CBS aired Super Bowl LVIII live on Sunday, Feb 11 from Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.
Malone, sang "America the Beautiful," and Andra Day, sang "Lift Every Voice and Sing," during the pregame.
